Cooking with Humor in the Kitchen with Kids

Humor is really an essential life skill as it makes us more equipped to deal with criticism, confrontation, and hurt. And one of the best places to teach humor to kids is in the kitchen! Humor is a great way to lighten the mood during rough times, and we all know the kitchen can get rough whether you forgot to preheat the oven, left something in too long, or just spilled a bowl of whatever! But with all that potential for mishaps, the kitchen is also a great place to help kids learn the art of humor and refine this skill that can help them throughout life.

So if you want to take advantage of the kitchen as a stage for practicing humor, try these silly activities with kids:

1. Mix Things Up

Kids are always learning in the kitchen—they’re learning ingredients, equipment, rules, etc. Mix things up by encouraging kids to forget a little of what they learned and instead make things up. Specifically, have them make up new names for ingredients and equipment as you bake together. For example, instead of calling it a cookie tray, they might say, “Pass me the tiki-tiki.” While this may sound silly, it will help kids work their creative muscles, think independently, and destress with some hearty giggles!

2. Put on a Baking Show

This activity may take a bit more effort, but it will be worth it for the laughs! Together with your child, come up with an idea for a baking skit. Maybe you make a real recipe but throw in jokes or perhaps you purposely “mess up” a recipe to be funny. Encourage kids to make their skit exaggerated, and assist them in writing a script for it. Then, if you and your child are up for it, record the skit and share it with family and friends!

3. Bake Silently

It’s always good to teach teamwork in the kitchen, but would teamwork be as easy without talking? Try baking together with your child without speaking. You can use gestures and movements to communicate, but no words! Whether or not you actually bake your recipe successfully, we know you’ll bake up tons of laughs!

4. Make Food Puns

Puns use words with double meanings or ones that sound similar to create funny sayings, such as, This mushroom is the life of the party because he is a fungi! In this example, fungi sounds like fun guy which makes it funny. Try to come up with your own food puns in the kitchen with kids!

5. Host a Kitchen Relay

While this might not sound like the kind of thing that tickles your funny bone at first, imagine how fun it can get as kids race against the clock in silly kitchen challenges. You can make the tasks extra ridiculous like “jump on one foot with a lemon on your head” to give kids chances to laugh at themselves and not take everything so seriously.

Remember, humor may be one the most important life skills, so give your kids chances to practice it as often as they can!
