Help kids learn about their family history with a Grandparents Day interview!

Looking for activities to do with Grandparents for Grandparents Day? Interviews are a great way for kids to build communication skills and learn fun facts about the people they’re interviewing. It’s even more special when those people are their very own grandparents! If your child can’t interview their grandparents directly, set up an interview with another family member who can share insight about them!

Question 1: What was your childhood like?

Kids can follow up with prompts like ‘what did you do for fun?’ or ‘what toys did you have?’ Grandparents and grandkids can learn a lot from each other by comparing how the times they grew up in compare. Kids not only learn about their grandparent’s personal experiences but gain insight into society and its changing ways. It’s a lesson in listening and history. Some of the activities grandparents recall from their childhoods can be fun things to do with grandchildren today!

Question 2: Where were you born and where have you lived?

If grandparents grew up far away, kids can gain a lesson in geography that they’ll be extra interested in learning about! If grandparents grew up locally, kids may be familiar with where their grandparents lived. But the town or city they know is likely much different than what it was like when their grandparent’s were born. Encourage kids to ask about what has changed.

Question 3: What is your favorite memory?

Children can work on developing socio-emotional skills by listening and responding to their grandparents’ favorite memories. They will see how people have different interests and might have an unexpected favorite memory. This will help them develop compassion and empathy towards others and a better understanding of people in general.

Question 4: What advancements have you lived through?

Kids can ask about what advancements their grandparents have seen, how those advancements have changed life, and if they liked or didn’t like what they saw. Kids can start thinking deeper about technology and how it affects people. They can consider there are different perspectives to things and the human experience as things change.

Question 5: If you could pass on one life lesson to me, what would it be?

Stronger bonds can be created between grandparents and grandkids when life lessons are shared. This question can help kids understand the importance of learning from others, listening skills, and communication in general.
