5 Safety Rules for Kids in the Kitchen

Cooking is a vital life skill to possess for various reasons. Being able to cook healthy meals at home is essential for obtaining nourishment. Teaching your kids to cook is essential these days as fast foods and processed foods obtained from outside the home are usually sub-par in quality. However, parents should be concerned about the safety issues of children using stoves and sharp knives.

This is understandable, as more serious accidents occur in home kitchens than in other rooms of the house, excluding the bathroom. Read the following tips to involve your children safely and responsibly in cooking.

Start your kids off early with their cooking education. With plenty of practice, their cooking ability will escalate quickly. They'll become familiar in and around the kitchen, and will be able to use many cooking gadgets comfortably and safely at a young age. For a start, measuring, pouring, and mixing ingredients are tasks that young children can comfortably handle. Scrambled egg is an easy favorite to help your child to begin learning culinary skills. For now, keep them away from knives, blenders and mixers, and the stove hotplates and oven. Save these for ages 10-12 onwards.

Even after your kids are experienced, independent cooks and don't need any help from you, they should still always ask permission. Explain that you still need to know when they are in the kitchen cooking, and you need to supervise to make sure they stay safe.

Teach your kids some rules to maintain hygiene in the kitchen. The number one kitchen and food safety rule is to wash hands before handling food, kitchen appliances, and utensils. No matter how clean your kids' hands might look, germs are always lurking, ready to cause infections or food poisoning. Teach them not to lick the spoons and other utensils while cooking. After they've finished, then they can lick to their heart's content before helping with the kitchen clean-up.

It's easy to forget that dishes coming straight out of the oven will be extremely hot, especially if your kids are used to using a microwave. Teach them to use a potholder or towel when handling hot dishes to avoid severe burns. Give them bright, colorful, kid-sized oven mitts they will love to use.

Kids love using their own special cooking tools. Colorful measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, mini rolling pin, a cutting board, and some cute oven mitts are sure to become favorites and encourage their interest in cooking. There are many cooking toys and games available for preschool kids. By playing with cooking toys, your younger children can become familiar with the different cooking accessories and tools. When they use the real ones in the kitchen, they will already have an idea of how to use them safely.

Cooking is undoubtedly a fun and educational activity for kids to develop an important life skill. However, establishing some clear safety rules is even more important to ensure safety when cooking.
