5 Gratitude Prompts for Kids

Explore the meaning of gratitude with kids! Then help them practice being grateful with these fun prompts.

1. Talk About What Matters

First, invite your child to close their eyes. Then, tell them to see what comes to mind when they hear the word “grateful.” Is it people they love, skills they have, opportunities they’ve been given, or hobbies and objects that matter to them? Talk about what they see.

2. Think About These Words: Great + Full

The word grateful combines the Latin word gratus, meaning pleasing (aka great) with the suffix -ful, meaning full of. Ask your child to share their thoughts on how the feeling of being grateful relates to the two words: great and full.

3. Take Time to Count Your Thanks

Have everyone in your family spend a whole day counting all the times they say “thanks.” Keep a running list of the reasons you each felt thankful. At the end of the day, discuss as a family if the number of times or the reasons you each felt thankful surprised you.

4. Find a Balance Between Attitude & Gratitude

It can be hard to feel grateful when a negative attitude sets in, but help your children understand that they can be cranky and grateful at the same time. The next time they feel cranky, encourage them to create their own version of this sentence: “I’m cranky about ___, and I’m grateful for ___.”

5. Show Appreciation with an Expression of Gratitude

Tell children to think of someone outside of their immediate family who they appreciate but don’t thank enough. It could be a friend, a teacher, a community member, etc. Help kids write a letter or make a craft expressing their gratitude to give to this person.
