7 Fun Ways to Ignite a Love of Learning at Home

Depending where you live, the kids are already back to school or just about. Help set them up for success on the first day of school and the whole year by igniting a love of learning at home!

Whether kids are back to school or just about ready to go, use these 7 tips to get them excited about learning and set them up for a successful school year ahead.

1. Talk About School in a Positive Way

Make school sound exciting to kids. Ask them what they are interested in learning, and discuss how school is a place where they get to explore all kinds of subjects they might discover they love. When kids get home from school, engage them in conversations about what they enjoyed learning at school each day.

2. Be in the Know

Make an effort to connect with your child’s teachers so that you can be in the loop about what the kids are learning. If your child doesn’t talk about what they learned on their own, you can say, “I heard from Mrs. Wilson that you got to learn about whales this week! That’s so exciting. What didn’t you know about whales before?” Show them that gaining knowledge is something to be proud of and excited about.

3. Incorporate Learning into Their Daily Routine

Whether you still have time before the first day of school or your school year routine has already started, you can get creative in brining learning into your daily routine with kids. Maybe you ask a trivia question every day on the way to school, share your afternoon snacks with a riddle challenge each day, or go around sharing fun facts every night at dinner. Squeezing learning into your day in a fun way will motivate kids to stay sharp and eager to learn.

4. Fill Up a Learning Jar

That’s right—add a jar to your school supplies list so you can make learning throughout the year even more fun at home. Have kids write down interesting things they learn throughout the week and toss them into the jar such as fun facts, life lessons, or anything they learned going back to school. On Fridays, read what everyone put in and get excited about learning together.

5. Get Hands-on

Don’t leave learning to be a bystander experience. Show kids that they can learn in so many hands-on ways apart from reading a book or listening to a lecture. One of the best hands-on ways to learn is through fun science experiments with kids. Baketivity has a bunch of fun science projects for kids to jump into on our homeschool resource page.

6. Learn Through Games

Another hands-on way to learn that directly challenges kids is through educational games. All games use math, reading, and science in some way so even playing a round of Monopoly can make learning an exciting event for kids. Then there are games designed for educational purposes like this vocabulary board game from Lakeshore Learning. Adding some educational games to your school supplies list will help bring the joy of learning to life at home whenever you want.

7. Focus Family Time on New Info

There are so many ways to learn as a family such as hosting a documentary night once a week or a research day once a month where you pose a question and the family finds answers together. You could also visit a museum or an exhibit to explore a new topic together. Make learning an experience through planned activities and not something solely reserved for a classroom.

As you prepare kids for the first day of school or the rest of the year, use these 7 tips to make learning an exciting part of life!
