Classic Soft Sugar Cookies

Ingredients For the Cookie:
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
Ingredients For the Frosting:
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3-4 Tbsp. heavy whipping cream
  • A drop of your desired food dye (optional)
  • Sprinkles (optional)
  Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium sized bowl whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder and cream of tartar until evenly combined then set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl cream the butter na sugar together using a whisk until nice and smooth.
  4. Add in the egg and vanilla to the butter mixture and continue to whisk until all of the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and combine until a nice soft cookie dough has formed.
  6. Scoop the cookies into 2 1/2 Tbsp. sized balls then place on your prepared cookie sheet. Using the palm of your hand gently flatten the cookie dough ball slightly but not all the way.
  7. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown on the edges.
  8. While the cookies bake, prepare the frosting.
  9. Whisk together the butter and the sugar until combined. Slowly add in the vanilla and heavy cream until the frosting is nice and smooth.
  10. If you wish to use food dye, add a drop in until you reach the desired color.
  11. Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating.
  12. To decorate, add a dollop of frosting on top of the cookie then use a butterknife or offset spatula to spread evenly.
  13. Top the cookies with sprinkles and enjoy! :)
