Fun Experiments to Mix Art and Science

Dive into hands-on experiments where science and art collide for the most exciting results!

Science and art are one and the same. Although we think one comes from feeling and one comes from logic, they both require you to think outside the box and explore new ways of thinking, seeing, and experimenting!

Here are 6 science experiments that double as kids' art projects:

1. Mix colors and make art.

Mixing colors is one of the most important art lessons for kids, and one they usually learn quickly because it’s hard for them to resist mixing paints! So give them the go-ahead with this experiment and enjoy science and art together. Start with a few different colors of paint. Encourage kids to put a spoonful of each color around a plate. Draw a circle between every two spoonfuls and instruct kids to mix the paints on these circles. In the end, they will have a makeshift painter’s palette and can paint away!

2. Investigate the effect of materials on color.

This one goes at the top of our list for fun art projects for children because of all the experimentation it involves. It’s also a great activity for parents looking for easy art projects for kids. First, bring out all different kinds of materials included in your kids’ art supplies from construction paper and tissue paper to fabric and wooden sticks. Then color on each material with markers. Evaluate how the color looks on each material. Does the color get lighter or darker? Does it soak in more on certain materials? What else do kids notice?

3. Test your mind.

Art activities for children don’t get much more fun than this one! If your family enjoys art games for kids such as Pictionary, they will love this activity. The goal is to challenge kids to close their eyes as they draw a self-portrait or an object of their choosing. As they draw, they will be testing if their brain can track where their lines are without being able to see. It’s a fun experiment that mixes science, art, and some humor when the drawings are revealed!

4. Paint with magnets.

Looking for super creative art ideas for kids? We bet you’ve never done this! Of all the kids painting ideas out there, this one takes it to another level. First, tape a piece of paper on top of a sheet of cardboard. Then, put paint on a small magnet and lay it on top of the paper. Now, use another magnet underneath the cardboard to drag the top magnet around. Try out moving multiple magnets around with different colored paint on them to make a masterpiece! Have you ever heard of more exciting DIY art for kids?

5. Experiment with chalk.

This is great to add to your list of art projects for preschoolers and elementary-age students. It’s easy to set up but so cool to do! First, take out a few pieces of chalk and black construction paper. Draw on one sheet with the chalk as is. Examine the texture, the look, and the consistency. Then dip a piece of chalk into water and let it soak for a second. Now draw on another piece of paper with the wet chalk and compare. Also, examine how it looks different on the paper while wet and then once it dries.

6. Make a melted masterpiece.

As you keep building an art education for children at home, you can’t forget this cool ice painting experiment. First, make ice cubes in the freezer with different drops of food color added to each one. While these are freezing, place a coffee filter flat in a bowl. Once the ice cubes are fully frozen, take them out and lay them on top of the coffee filter in the bowl. Observe as the colors melt and mix together to create a beautiful work of art!
