Help Your Child Find Inspiration to Create

Help your child discover what inspires them so they can create kids' art projects that serve as an outlet for self-expression, a window into their personality, and a way for them to connect with others.

Does your child light up when you go to the movies?

Become energized when they step into nature?

Or take great pride in culinary creations?

We all find inspiration in different ways. Help your child pay attention to what fills them with passion and fuels their creative ideas with these family conversation starters.
  • What is your favorite subject in school?

When it comes to creativity, explain to kids that a lot of artists get inspired by learning new things. Talk to your kids about what they like to learn about most. How could this lead to creative art ideas for your kids?
  • What hobbies excite you the most?

Does your child love going outside? Are they big on water sports? Do they love animals? Explore the kinds of hobbies and interests they have and how these could inspire easy art projects for kids like drawing their favorite animal, or advanced DIY art for kids like knitting a blanket to sit on outside.
  • What makes you feel really happy? What about other big emotions?

Typical children’s art workshops might not dive right into emotions, but any level artist knows that the key to great art is getting in tune with your feelings. Feelings can be the best source of inspiration for art activities for children to give kids painting ideas, drawing ideas, and more. Talk about what they feel and why, and see if this leads to any inspiration to create.
  • What fills you with energy?

Things that energize us are usually tapping into a part of us that wants to be shared! Are there any topics that when your kids talk about, they literally can’t sit still because they are buzzing with energy and excitement? You can help kids channel energy and excitement like this into arts and crafts, such as making a model airplane if they love planes or sculpting a T-Rex out of clay if they love dinosaurs.
  • What message or lesson do you wish you could share with people?

Ask kids if there is a lesson they have learned or a message someone has shared with them that really inspired them. Explain that the chances are it will inspire others too if they share it through art. Tell kids that very important conversations can be prompted by art pieces, so what kind of conversations would they like to get started?   Remember, March is Youth Art Month so be sure to use these conversation starters and other tools to support art education for children and teach your kids the value of creativity.   Get extra artsy with a kit from the #1 Cake Artist Duff Goldman’s S’mores Cookies Kit!
