Introducing Children to the World of Art

From children’s art classes to museum visits, there are so many art activities for children that can motivate them to express their own creative ideas. During Youth Art Month, let's explore a few!

March is Youth Art Month in the United States. It is a time to celebrate the value art has in the lives of children, support art education, and encourage kids to engage in creative activities.

Whether or not kids have shown an interest in art, with such a wide variety of art activities for children, there is sure to be a creative outlet that interests them. That’s why being a part of your child’s art education outside of school is so important. From traditional museum visits to messy finger painting at home to baking with kids in the kitchen, art is all around us – and your kids are likely talented artists in their own way! Help your kids unleash their inner artist with these creative art ideas for kids!

1. Visit a museum, art gallery, or local artist exhibit.

Art education for children begins by introducing them to art that is already making waves in the world. With a visit to an art museum, gallery, or local exhibit, kids can examine how art is created and shared. They can personally witness the impact a piece of art can have on them, what it can make them think, and explore what inspires them. 2. Go to an arts and crafts fair or host one!

Visiting an arts and crafts fair is an amazing opportunity for kids to explore different kinds of art and mediums. They will see artisans of all kinds showcasing their work and be able to find inspiration on a grand scale. Parents can also get some ideas for fun art projects for children while visiting. And there’s no better way to display kids’ art projects than at a craft fair for sale! Think about all the DIY art for kids out there and how wonderful it would be to see your child's artwork displayed at a school-wide craft fair or right outside your home at a little art stand.

3. Learn a new artistic talent.

All you need is some kids’ art supplies and you can try out a number of easy art projects for kids. Like drawing portraits, molding clay, or exploring kids' painting ideas. You may want to consider experimenting with mediums like writing, photography, and more if you have the available materials. All of these mediums can be incorporated into simple art projects for preschoolers, advanced art activities for older kids, or even homeschool activities for homeschooled kids. Speaking of homeschool curriculum, here's a list of art activities for kids to use in homeschool projects, such as making floral art or even painting a bedroom!

4. Enroll kids in children’s art classes or take one together.

Children’s art workshops exist for almost every medium. You can try pottery classes, painting classes, or find art lessons for kids in another medium your child might be interested in. Michaels Craft Store offers several kid-friendly art classes online and in-person!

5. Get creative with art for kids!

When getting kids interested in art, it might help to think outside of the box with activities such as:
