Make Your Summer to School Transition Stress-Free

The fun doesn’t have to end just yet, but here’s how to start slowing down as kids get ready to transition back to school.

As you help your family prepare for the end of summer and the first day of school, these helpful tips for slowing down can make the transition easier for kids and parents.

1. Make Home a Retreat

Switch gears from rushing around and cramming in summer activities for kids to showing children that home is a safe place to destress and relax after a busy day. Add in some calmer activities at home such as daily family stretching or meditation. Doing these activities together now can help you build up a toolbox of de-stressors that you can use throughout the year.

2. Set and Listen to Expectations

Take time before the busy school year picks up to casually discus your child’s goals for the new year and help them set realistic expectations. Share your own expectations for children in school and at home so that there is time for them to process everything beforehand. What expectations do you have for family life too? Do you want to work in family game nights? Dinners together? In addition to your basic school supplies list, consider things you might need for other goals such as a family wall calendar to keep track of activities.

3. Spread Out the Fun

As you slow down toward the end of summer, start thinking about how you will incorporate some of that fun summer energy into the school year. Sure, planning out which school supplies kids need is important, but don’t forget to plan fun too. Help children acknowledge they are about to transition to a different pace while reminding them good times are still ahead by planning a family outing or weekend trip a month or two into the school year. This helps them start school with something to look forward to.

4. Welcome a New Routine

Rather than jumping into the first day of school with a drastically new bedtime and wake-up call, start slowly adjusting kids schedules from summertime to school time so the first day of school isn’t a shock to their system. Explain to children this will make the school year easier and help them be ready and rested for the best start to the new year.

5. Cut Yourself a Break

Back to school can be hard, so if adjusting takes time, be sure to cut yourself and your kids a break. Take a step back and a deep breath when you need to, and encourage children to do the same. Transitions are never the easiest thing, so don’t be too hard on anyone as things switch around from summer to school.

Going back to school brings a new set of changes and challenges every year, so help kids start preparing before the summer ends with these ideas. Together, you can transition from the end of summer right into the first day of school with ease!
