New St. Patrick’s Day Traditions to Start With Kids

Want to join in the fun of St. Patrick’s Day festivities with your family but not sure where to start? Try taking on some of these traditions with your kids that you can enjoy every year!

St. Patrick’s Day has become a big part of American culture, celebrated every year with parades in big cities, parties at schools, and Irish dancers at restaurants! But if your kids want even more Irish-themed shenanigans at home, join in the fun with the traditions on this list.

1. Go Green

A simple way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at home with kids is going green! Deck your house out in green decorations from streamers to balloons if you choose, or just have everyone in your family wear green. You can make a tradition to buy matching green shirts every year or some fun hats, necklaces, and headwear. You can also tie in green drinks and food or even celebrate by having the kids go on a scavenger hunt to look for green items in the house.

2. Have an Irish Sing-Along

Music and dancing are a big part of Irish culture. While you may not be able to take up traditional Irish step dancing in a night or learn to play the flute or fiddle, you can always find some good old-fashioned Irish folk music to listen to online. Sound like fun? Jump into a traditional Irish sing-along with this playlist from ABC Kids Music.

3. Look for Leprechaun Visitors

Folklore says that tricky leprechauns may visit homes the night before St. Patrick’s Day. Help your kids set traps to catch a leprechaun! It’s unlikely you’ll catch a sneaky leprechaun, but maybe the luck of the Irish will be on your side! Or maybe your kids will wake up to green leprechaun footprints or a trail of chocolate gold coins left behind! Get the creative juices flowing as you think of a container and bait idea to attract a leprechaun while looking at these kids’ leprechaun trap ideas!

4. Engage in Rainbow-Themed Activities

Everyone knows a leprechaun’s best friend is a rainbow! So why not celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with rainbow-themed games, crafts, and food? There are also tons of rainbow-themed science experiments you can try and other activities, like this rainbow movement game.

5. Make DIY Shamrock Shakes

There’s no better way to end your St. Patrick’s Day celebration than with a delicious Shamrock Shake! Lucky for you, it’s super easy to make. Just blend vanilla ice cream, milk, and a few drops of green food coloring. If you’d like, you can also add peppermint extract for a minty taste! Then pour the shake into cups and top your creation with whipped cream and green sprinkles. Yum!
