Pranks for Younger Kids

Whoopee cushions and fake bugs can be fun, but try these pranks to make little kids think! 1. Messy Morning Routine When the kids wake up, tell them you are going to walk them through their morning routine like usual. Then, do everything out of order! This will give kids the chance to practice sequence recognition when they undoubtedly correct all your mistakes! 2. Silent Speaking When talking to your kids at the breakfast table or on the way to school, don’t actually speak. Keep moving your mouth, but don’t let any sound come out. When it seems they’re not hearing you, begin to pretend you are getting louder or even shouting. They’ll have to use critical thinking and reasoning skills to figure out if something is wrong with their ears or you! 3. Breakfast Brownies To prepare for this prank, cut big letter “E’s” out of brown paper and hide them around the kitchen. Then tell your kids that you made brownies for breakfast. Ask if they can find the brownies. As kids search and analyze their surrounding, they’ll notice the big letter “E’s” and realize the prank. It might be a good idea to have real brownies ready that you tell them they can have as a snack later in the day!

Pranks for School-Age Kids

Help school-age children laugh and learn at the same time with these tricky pranks! 1. Silly Spelling Ask your kids if they could help check over the shopping list for this week. Write down a bunch of household items on a piece of paper, but spell all the words backward. For example, “Milk” would be written as “klim.” If kids say they don’t know what any of the words are, encourage them to figure out exactly what is wrong with the words, i.e. they are spelled backward. 2. Math Mistakes As you are making dinner, start saying math problems out loud related to cooking or setting the table. For example, “I need 3 pieces of bread plus 1 extra piece. So that’s 7 pieces of bread,” or “2 people sit on this side of the table and 2 people sit on that side, so we need 8 plates.” See if your kids pick up on your math mistakes! 3. Shrinking Shoes To prepare for this prank, stuff your kids’ shoes with tissue paper near the toes. This way, when they step into their shoes to leave the house, they will think their feet shrunk! Kids will have to work their problem solving muscles to figure out what’s going on.

Pranks for Older Kids

Play these jokes on older kids to test them and tickle their funny bones! 1. Wacky Word Search Use this mock word search with older kids to trick them into searching for words that aren’t there. See how long it takes them to notice none of the words listed are actually in the word search! While they're testing their eyes, their attention to detail will be tested too because there is one hidden phrase they should spot, which is: “April Fools!”

  2. Lost Track of Backpack Hide your child’s backpack, and leave a single riddle or a trail of riddles they have to solve to track their backpack down before they can go to school. For example, you could hide a riddle in the place they usually leave the backpack that says, “I was feeling unclean, so I went to the room where soap is seen.” This could lead them to the bathroom, and so on. 3. Broken Bottle To prepare for this prank, poke holes in a water bottle with a push-pin while the cap is sealed tightly. Water won’t leak out due to surface tension in the bottle. That is, until the cap is untwisted. When kids twist the cap, water will spray out of the holes. When they reseal the cap, the water will stop. Kids will have to use their science brains to figure out what is going on!
