Valuable Lesson on Work/Play Balance for Kids

Use Labor Day as a chance to talk to kids about how taking breaks is just as important as working hard.

Just as work-life balance is important for adults, balancing work and play is important for kids. Explain to kids what this kind of balance means by sharing a little bit of Labor Day history and asking kids to share their thoughts!

History of Labor Day to Share with Kids

Did you know Labor Day became a federal holiday around the same time workers were fighting for shorter workdays, safer workplaces, and better pay? Many Americans worked over 10 hours a day and some 16 hours! Workers took to the streets with signs that demanded, “Less work, more pay!” as they felt they were not being paid fairly for the contributions they made. Such efforts led to the typical 8-hour work day we know today (which is half of what some workers had to work back then). It also led to the celebration of Labor Day to honor all that workers contribute to America.

Questions for Kids:

  1. How would you feel if you had to work 16 hours or ⅔ of every day?
  2. How do you think working too hard affects the quality of work (how well the work is done)? What about workers’ quality of life (how good a person’s life is)?
  3. Why is it important that people work?
  4. Why is time for fun and play also important?

This Labor Day, be sure to honor the hard work of others and take a break with your family for all the hard work you do!
