Flag Day Activities to Boost Learning and Level Up the Fun

Don’t skip out on Flag Day festivities—instead turn the celebration into a chance for kids to learn in fun and hands-on ways.

Flag Day might not get as much hype as the 4th of July, but it’s a great holiday to take advantage of with kids, especially using these engaging educational activity ideas for children!

1. Majestic Flag Math

Make a whole math lesson or simply engage in a conversation about the flag with kids to build math skills. You can discuss the patterns of the stripes and stars, count the stripes and stars, and even study the shapes and angles on the flag for a dose of geometry. For a more in-depth lesson, you can draw slightly varied versions of the flag with less or more stars and stripes. Then have children use arithmetic to figure out how many are missing or were added.

2. A Lesson on Flag Language

Talking about the flag is an engaging way to build kids’ literacy skills. Help kids master the rich vocabulary surrounding flags, including words such as canton, emblem, and hoist. You can also teach kids the Pledge of Allegiance and discuss the words and phrases you recite together.

3. Fun Flag History

Let kids know that every flag has a story to tell, and America’s flag is no exception. Flag Day is the perfect chance to explore American history with your budding historians. Discuss how the flag represented the 13 colonies with just 13 stars at first. Ask kids to share their thoughts on why the number of stars increased to 50. Dive into the deeper history of the American Revolution and let kids know why the flag became such an important symbol for America.

4. Science Time with Flags

From colors and shapes to design engineering, there is so much science to be explored with flags. You can start with simple observations, having children use their senses to describe the flag. If you can access other flags in-person or online, encourage kids to make comparisons. For older children, discuss how a flag is made and engineered from color creation to sewing materials.

5. Artistic Expression in Flags

Explore our flag and others with an artist's perspective. As you analyze the symbolism behind the elements, invite children to think about why each one was chosen by the creator. As their imaginations begin to run wild, give them a chance to express themselves through their own flag with this in-depth DIY flag activity for kids!

There you have it—as you wave those flags this month, take a step back and enjoy all the educational adventures that await your family in those bold stars and stripes. Happy Flag Day, friends!
